Yoga in the Mountains - A new yoga studio to practice at in Whistler

Yoga studios took a serious hit during the pandemic and unfortunately many of them did not pull through. That dreaded announcement of ‘permanently closed’ seemed to keep coming, starting with North Yoga in Squamish and as the months dragged on in the pandemic taking more yoga studios down in the Sea-to-Sky.

When Yyoga Neo Whistler closed I was devastated, it was my space to practice and served so many people in the Whistler community for such a long time. I nervously wondered would we be next with all these great places tumbling around us. Fortunately we pulled through and since then have been preserving the question, what does the community need? The Whistler community needs more yoga studios.

I began seeing yoga crop up in the park, in gyms and recreation centres and online yoga seemed to be everywhere you turned to online. It felt disjointed like there was no yoga studio hub. You had to make a decision of where and what day you would show up and commit to at a given place. The flexibility of ‘I had a bad day’ or ‘I need to ground myself, is there a class today’ seems to be gone. I wanted that back.

The other thing with practicing yoga at a yoga studio is that it is an empty, clean, free of distractions, peaceful space. Perhaps there is essential oils diffusing, props, adjustable lighting, white walls. For me personally the aesthetic of the room invokes a vibe, the vibe invites me into the space where I can fully relax and surrender. I never felt that vibe was the same when taking a yoga class on a rubber gym floor or at a busy recreation centre with weights being dropped on the floor above or families loudly enjoying the pool.

We have a beautiful mezzanine space at the studio where we teach aerial yoga and handstands. It was designed as a yoga space. I envisioned it as a sacred space to practice and bring the community together. Then the pandemic happened and it lay empty and lifeless. Finally things began to shift and Joanna Berringer Yoga came along and filled the space with life. Joanna practiced power yoga at White Gold Yoga lead by Erin Anderson and when the community lost that yoga studio the power yogis in Whistler lived on. We are delighted that Joanna will be hosting power yoga and deep flow yoga at Treeline.

Stacey Harrigan will also be joining us for Rise & Shine Hatha early mornings (your chance to practice before work) we are looking at you Function and Cheakamus Crossing residents. As always if you're feeling flighty we have aerial yoga which will elevate your yoga practice with a mixture of on the ground and in air. Don’t worry! You are close to the ground and this style of yoga practice can help deepen your practice and assist you in postures you may not be able to get into on the ground. Aerial yoga is for everyone! No aerial experience or fear of heights needed.

We also are delighted to be able to host Deep House Yoga, an upcoming yoga event on April 1st 2022 with Joanna Berringer Yoga x Treeline. Dj G-Rock will be live for this super juicy deep flow session. We can’t wait to have the Whistler yoga community come together at this evening yoga event for a deep yoga flow and community connection.

Yogis of Whistler we invite you to come enjoy our yoga studio space! We have a regular yoga schedule which allows for drop in and x5 or x10 class passes. If online yoga isn’t doing it for you and you are craving connection and community yoga at Treeline is for you. We can’t wait to welcome you into our yoga space.
